ABSTRACT
One of the atheistic philosophical school in Indian Philosophy, Sāṁkhya school, admits two main theories – ‘Puruṣa and Prakriti’. Therefore, Sāṁkhya philosophy is also called dualistic philosophy. Among them, nature is devoid of knowledge (jňāna) or consciousness(cetanā) and active(kriyāśīl) or spontaneous(svakriya). On the other hand, Puruṣa is its complete opposite in nature. Puruṣa is conscious on one side and passive on the other. This visible world phenomenon has been created as a result of Prakriti. However, the role of Puruṣa in this creation is not too little. Without Puruṣa active Prakriti is unable to create the world. Because nature is incapable of action without the presence of Puruṣa. Just as it is not possible for the crippled (paṅgu) or the blind (andha)to perform any work, but the crippled and the blind together are capable of performing any work, in the same way Prakriti can become active only when it comes near the Puruṣa. In this paper, by revealing the nature of Puruṣa, I shall try to discuss or highlight despite being inactive (niṣkriya) how can Purusa participate in the creation of the world?
Keywords: Puruṣa, Prakriti, Bahupuruṣa, Triguṇātmaka, Niṣkriya, Cetanā.
