Development versus Environment: A Historical and Critical Analysis of the Narmada Bachao Andolan Subir Gayen, Assistant Professor, Dhruba Chand Haldar College, Dakshin Barasat, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save Narmada Movement) is an extremely important and long-standing environmental movement in India. The movement began in 1985 primarily to oppose the construction of dams on the Narmada River, taking a massive form particularly in opposition to the 'Sardar Sarovar' project. Numerous environmentalists, human rights activists, social workers, intellectuals, and common people joined this movement. The Narmada Bachao Andolan is a significant environmental and human-rights-based social movement in India that did not merely oppose dam construction, but brought to the forefront the debates over development versus humanity, state versus civic rights, and environmental preservation versus economic growth. Challenging the conventional concept of development, this movement raised demands for 'humane rehabilitation', 'environmental sustainability', and 'democratic participation'. The Narmada Bachao Andolan is a landmark chapter in India's democratic and social history, providing guidance for future movements. Along with the historical context of the Narmada Bachao Andolan, the essay highlights its causes, growth and dynamics, key features, and challenges. This movement is not just an environmental movement; it has brought the broader questions of social justice and participatory development to light.
