ABSTRACT | ||
The Bodhisattva Avanadān-Kalpalatā, written by the Kashmiri scholar Kshemendra (c. 990 AD – 1070 AD), is an outstanding work of Sanskrit Buddhist literature. It is a collection of legendary biographies of Bodhisattvas, each chapter of which beautifully describes the qualities and character of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas. The Avanadāna-Kalpalatā and many other Mahayana texts have been translated into Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian. This article briefly discusses the influence of the original Sanskrit Buddhist texts on Indian and foreign literature and religion, their significance and preservation. | ||
