ABSTRACT | ||
The three cardinal principles discussed in Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava philosophy are sambandha (relationship), abhidheya (the means of attaining the end) and prayojana (the ultimate end). The eternal Object of relationship is Kṛṣṇa. By practising Kṛṣṇa-bhakti or devotion to Kṛṣṇa one can attain Kṛṣṇa-preman or divine love for Kṛṣṇa which is the summum bonum of life. So Kṛṣṇa-bhakti is called abhidheya or sādhana-bhakti, which ultimately yields the fruit of Kṛṣṇa-preman. There are two types of sādhana-bhakti - vaidhī bhakti (devotion following scriptural regulations) and rāgānugā bhakti (devotion following the spontaneous inclination of heart). According to the Bhāgavata, sādhana-bhakti has nine limbs, viz. hearing (śravaṇa), chanting (kīrtana), meditation (smaraṇa), serving His feet (pāda-sevana), worship (arcana), praise (vandana), servitude (dāsya), friendship (sakhya) and self-resignation (ātma-nivedana). Jīva Gosvāmī (1513-1598), an eminent exponent of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava philosophy has added two more methods of sādhana-bhakti in his magnum opus Bhakti- Sandarbha. He has opined that there are practically eleven modes of devotion. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to analyse and interpret this unique contribution of Jīva Gosvāmī. | ||
