ABSTRACT | ||
The public library expands human knowledge to the community by presenting and preserving the past and present documented human knowledge to the next generation through books and literature. Community information is the information for human survival and development and in another sight the community information services are those services that help individuals and groups to solve their daily problems and help to participate in the democratic process. The public library helps every person in the community individually or collectively by providing community information services according to their need in every aspect. In the current era of information explosion, the public library is performing an important social responsibility by providing various types of community information services by providing information for human survival and development, civil rights, local information etc. In this article we discuss about community information, the need of community information, community information services and types of community information services as well as the role of public libraries in providing community information services and the nature and quality of document collection also. It sheds light on what kind of programmes, information services and facilities public libraries can provide for providing community information services. Finally, Suggestions have been provided for identifying potential problems of public libraries for providing community information services and for eliminating the problems.
