The British Education System from the Perspective of Rajnarayan Basu: Intellectual Crisis and National Renaissance Pratik Duary, Research Scholar, Department of History, Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University, West Bengal, India | ||

In Nineteenth Century India, the colonial education system, despite creating a new intellectual space, mainly aimed to form a middle class supporting colonial rule. Thomas Babington Macaulay’s 1835 Minute solidified English education’s dominance, marginalizing Indian traditions. Rajnarayan Basu critically analyzed this cultural crisis, proposing an alternative education grounded in national consciousness. This paper explores Basu’s educational philosophy, showing he sought to integrate Western knowledge with Indian traditional knowledge and heritage, viewing education as vital for national self-identity, not just employment. He advocated for self-esteem and national awareness against the cultural alienation caused by British policies. Ultimately, Basu’s ideas were crucial in critiquing colonial dominance and shaping Indian nationalism, offering a path for national resurgence through the 19th-century cultural crisis. | ||
