ABSTRACT | ||
Rabindranath established his school at Santiniketan in 1901. There he emphasized on sports, physical training, dance, song, drawing etc. along with studies. He wanted to introduce an educational system of his own design as opposed to the one introduced by the English. Where student independence will be emphasized. Their education will not be confined to textbooks. They will receive education in the open and generous wilderness of nature. Dance, song, drawing etc. will be the curriculum of their education. It was on this basis that he gave special importance to dance education in his school. Like painting, Rabindranath's interest in dance was awakened in his later years. In 1920, dance was accepted as a subject of study in the first Santiniketan school and Visva Bharati. In 1924, the dance took place in the first Santiniketan festival. Rabindranath himself was adept at dancing as evidenced by Sita Devi. On the evening of 26 Baisakh, 1911, drama Raja, written by Rabindranath himself, was performed with the students and professors of the school. Many fans from Kolkata came to Santiniketan to watch this performance. Among the arrivals was Sita Devi, daughter of Prabasi Patrika editor Ramanand Chattopadhyay. He wrote about the performance in his memoirs, “The boys' songs were very beautiful. I was fascinated to see the dance of Thakurdarupi Kabibar between them. He could dance beautifully.” In this article we will discuss the aspect of dance education in the first phase of Rabindranath's Brahmacharya Vidyalaya.
