The period between the ancient and medieval periods, especially the pala period (c. 750 AD. to 1161 AD) is an important chapter of the history of Bengal. At this time, Bengal became the first political unity and a significant awakening in religion, education, literature and culture. The script especially inscriptions, copperplate inscriptions and manuscripts serve as a reliable primary source. This article outlines the society and culture of Bengal at that time through a detailed analysis of the language, content and context of the pala script.
