The Language of Inner Life in Haribhushan Pal’s Short Stories: Love, Psychology and Marital Relationships Dipak Dey, Guest Lecturer, Department of Bengali, Ramthakur College, Agartala, Tripura, India
ABSTRACT | ||
This paper explores the representation of inner life in the short stories of Haribhushan Pal with special emphasis on love, psychology, and marital relationships. As an important voice in the Bengali literary tradition of Tripura, Haribhushan Pal portrays human emotions through subtle narration, restrained expression, and psychological depth. His stories avoid excessive dramatic conflict; instead, they focus on the silent movements of the human mind, the complexities of memory, emotional insecurity, and the fragile nature of interpersonal relationships. The paper analyses several selected stories such as ‘Saap’, ‘Porar Table’, ‘Mounamukhar’, ‘Faatal’ to examine how the writer presents romantic love, unexpressed desire, nostalgia, suspicion, trust, and emotional distance within domestic life. In these stories, love is not merely a romantic experience but a deeply psychological state shaped by memory, silence, and inner conflict. Pal’s characters often struggle between past and present emotions, resulting in subtle tensions within conjugal relationships. The study further highlights the author’s artistic craftsmanship in depicting middle-class Bengali social life and everyday experiences through simple yet evocative language. His narratives reveal that human relationships are sustained not only by social institutions but also by emotional understanding, mutual trust, and moral sensitivity. Ultimately, Haribhushan Pal’s short stories emerge as profound explorations of the human psyche, where inner emotions become the true language of life and relationships.
