ABSTRACT | ||
The debate over the existence of pudgala or person in Buddhist philosophy is an important topic that has been discussed in depth in the discourse. Early Buddhist sects, called pudgalavādins, believed that the pudgala is an undefined and unchanging entity, existing in a continuum of life experiences. pudgalavādins carefully explain the relationship of pudgala to Skandha, which prevents misconceptions in Spiritism. Their logical argument is that the transmission of existence without pudgala is inconceivable. They cite the Buddha in support of the existence of pudgalas, although the Theravādins analyze these arguments and show inconsistencies between them. The Theravādins question whether pudgala is identical with material qualities, and they claim that pudgalavādins are trapped in Ucchedavāda and Sāssatavāda. The tawdry debate between the two side’s shows that pudgalavādins are trying to explain life experience theoretically, where they are rejecting the existence of entities identified as pudgala or individuals. This debate is not only theoretical, but it also questions the fundamental principles of Buddhist philosophy and the concept of soul, which reflects the diversity and development of religions. | ||
