Experiments with Anti-British Movements in Burma: 1886–1947 CE
Paramita Das, Associate Professor, Chittaranjan College, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The previous name of Myanmar was Burma. Before 1885, Burma was not a part of British India. Following the British conquest of Upper Burma in 1885, Burma was incorporated into British India and remained so until its separation in 1937. After 1885, Indian migration to Burma resumed in a new form. Many Indians, including educated unemployed people, migrated there in search of employment, while Indian nationalists settled in Burma to carry out anti-colonial activities. Consequently, Burma emerged as an important centre of Indian nationalist activities. Later, communists from both India and Burma fought together against British imperialism. During the 1940s, Burma also became an important base for the Indian freedom movement under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Although this movement was ultimately unsuccessful, it left a significant impact on the anti-colonial struggle. This article analyses how Burma became a safe and strategically important centre for Indian anti-colonial activities during the period from 1885 to 1947.
