ABSTRACT | ||
Genocide, 1971 mass killing of the people in East Pakistan by the then West Pakistani occupation army and their collaborators during the War of Liberation. It began on 25 March 1971, as Operation Searchlight was launched by West Pakistan (now Pakistan) to militarily subdue the Bengali population of East Pakistan; the Bengalis comprised the demographic majority and had been calling for independence from the Pakistani state. No definite survey has yet been made to ascertain the exact number of people killed by the Pakistan army. Immediately after the War of Liberation, it was estimated to be as high as three million and raped more than two million women only in a period of nine months. The genocide committed by the Pakistan army is one of the worst holocausts in world history. Pakistani army established its control over the entire country and carried out brutal genocide in remote areas of East Pakistan. Pakistani army carried out genocide in Barishal district which is a southern remote areas of Bangladesh. The process of mass killing was going on randomly in these areas. In particular, the paper reflected a case study on the village Gabha Genocide in Jhalakathi Thana (now Banaripara Upazila in Barishal district). On 2nd May, 1971 the Pakistani army carried out genocide and killed many people at Gabha, Narerkathi and its adjacent villages in Barishal district. The aim of this paper is to explore issues and find out how and why the Pakistani army carried our genocide in Gabha. In this paper, it can bring a case study to understand the true history about genocide and it would enrich/improve/ decorate the genocide studies of Bangladesh. Keywords: 1971, Genocide, Liberation war, Pakistani army, Barishal. |
