ABSTRACT | ||
The Tebhaga Movement is an important chapter in the history of India's freedom struggle and the farmers' movement. In order to implement the recommendations of the Floud Commission, farmers from about 19 districts of Bengal joined this movement in 1946-47. This movement took an all-out form in Midnapore district and a large section of the women's society of the district played an important role in this struggle. Bimala Maji took a leading role in promoting and organizing the movement among women in this district. She was the first-line leader of this district and propagated the movement almost on foot throughout the district. She formed the "Women's Army" in the district. Other leaders of the district were Purnima Patra, Revati Bala Mandal, Lakshmi Bala Gayen, Kamala Giri, Aarti Mandal etc. This movement took a militant form in a vast area of Sutahata, Mahishadal, Nandigram, Keshpur, Daspur, Ghatal, Garbeta in the Medinipur district. The subject of my article is how women, after being oppressed for ages, engaged in the struggle to establish their rights and dignity under the leadership of peasant organizations and wrote history. | ||
