ABSTRACT | ||
Soumitra Chattopadhyay was a multifaceted creative personality whose engagement with literature extended, directly and indirectly, across almost every major genre. Over the course of his long and distinguished acting career, he came into contact with numerous eminent personalities and earned the enduring affection, admiration, and respect of audiences and readers alike. His remarkable versatility, evident in his portrayal of a wide range of characters on stage and screen, stemmed from his deep commitment to acting and his extensive understanding of life and the world around him. His dramatic works engage with a wide spectrum of social, political, and existential concerns. The relationship between the individual and society, political instability, the crisis of existence, shifting social values, and the complexities of human relationships constitute some of the recurring themes in his plays. Within this diverse thematic framework, particular significance is attached to the lives and experiences of the working class. Their struggles, aspirations, social conditions, and everyday realities occupy an important place in his dramatic imagination. Through these representations, Chattopadhyay demonstrates not only his literary and dramatic sensibility but also his profound engagement with the social realities of his time. | ||
