ABSTRACT | ||
Being equal is getting equal rights, equal opportunities and equal status, primarily, if we stick to social equality of humans, which is our intention, or our limitation of interest here. It emphasises providing the same resources and chances to everyone, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. These can involve legal protections, access to public goods, and equal treatment in various aspects of life. The concept of equality is interpreted, deliberated as well by many philosophers. John Rawls’ theory of justice emphasis upon the concept of justice as fairness, advocating for a society that reconciles liberty and equality. He upheld two main principles: the equal liberty principle and the difference principle combined with fair equality of opportunity. These principles, chosen under a “veil of ignorance”, aim to establish a just and stable social structure. On the other hand, Amartya Sen’s concept of equality centers around the idea of “basic capability equality”, which emphasizes ensuring everybody has the opportunity to acquire fundamental capabilities like good health, education, and economic security. He proclaimes that true equality is not just about equal resources or outcomes, but about enabling individuals to have the freedom and capacity to pursue the lives they value. The following article is a detailed review of the views of Rawls and Amartya Sen on equality. Keywords: Equality, Egalitarianism, Impartiality, Basic Good, Capability, n-tuple |
