India–Bangladesh Relations in the Post–Sheikh Hasina Period: An Analysis of Geopolitics, Connectivity, Economy and Strategic Realignment
Dr. Partha Shaw, Independent Research Scholar, Hooghly, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The political transition in Bangladesh in August 2024 has ushered in a new chapter in the diplomatic landscape of South Asia. During Sheikh Hasina’s long tenure, India-Bangladesh relations had attained an effective and relatively stable framework encompassing security cooperation, infrastructural connectivity, trade, energy, and border management. However, with the advent of an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, coupled with intense nationalist public sentiment within Bangladesh, long-standing grievances regarding the Teesta River and border issues, and renewed strategic deliberations concerning the 'Pakistan-China factor,' the relationship is now navigating a complex phase of transition. This paper analyzes the historical foundations of India-Bangladesh relations, the achievements of the 2009–2024 period, and the geopolitical, economic, and strategic dilemmas that have emerged in the post-Hasina scenario. Furthermore, drawing upon government documents, recent policy statements, news reports, and analytical sources, the study examines issues such as trade imbalances, energy interdependence, connectivity projects, regional cooperation, and potential future policy trajectories. The central argument of this paper is that personality-driven diplomacy is no longer sustainable; the relationship between India and Bangladesh must now be reconstructed upon an institutional framework grounded in mutual respect and the equitable reconciliation of interests—a framework capable of transcending changes in government.
