ABSTRACT | ||
Liberalism is one of the most important political ideologies of the modern world. John Locke, Adam Smith, J. S. Mill, John Rawls and all other thinkers developed the ideology. These ideologies originated in the 16th and 17th centuries in Western Europe. John Locke is regarded as the father of Liberalism. He argued that the main duty of a liberal state is to protect the three rights of the individual: right to life, liberty and property. So, liberalism is more important to the individuals than the state. These are the core political values of liberalism. However, in the context of Indian political thought, Raja Rammohan Roy was a social reformer, the pioneer of India's Renaissance, the inaugurator of modern India, had provided his liberal political views and said that it was the best ideology for the development and progress of India and its societies. Therefore, he emphasizes freedom of speech and expression, freedom of the press, faith in democracy and constitutionalism, the rule of law, international coexistence, education reform, individual liberty, etc. All these contributions made him a notable liberal political thinker in India. Keywords: Liberalism, Individual Freedom, Social Reform, Renaissance, Freedom of Speech and expression, Democracy. |
