ABSTRACT
Rabindranath Tagore's literary work depicts the diverse and evolved form of women's life. In his numerous short stories, the position of women in the patriarchal society, the discriminatory treatment of women and at the same time the story of women's protest and self-establishment are revealed. Rabindranath's hands have given Bengali literature countless female characters who are uncompromising on the question of ethics. His female characters are independent-minded and have strong personalities. Rabindra's short stories draw our attention to the individualism of women of various classes and professions and women's protest against various inconsistencies in society. Rabindranath saw the life of women in this country with his insight. Compared to other branches of literature, Rabindra's short stories have given the greatest expression of women's protest ideas. It is through protest and resistance that the opposing forces of society are defeated and social reforms are achieved. Rabindranath's six famous short stories are 'Denapaona', 'Shasti', 'Haimanti', 'Strir Patra', 'Aparichita' and 'Payala Number'. The heroines of the stories are Nirupama, Chandara, Haimanti, Mrinal, Kalyani and Anila respectively. These six female characters are a burning flame in the face of society's so-called marriage customs, family religion, dowry system, in-laws' tyranny and oppression. Women who are vocal and protest against injustice awaken the spirit of protest in the hearts of women of all classes of society. Women protestors inspire to raise the status of women in society. In the present article, an attempt has been made to analyze the nature of protest spirit against the social customs of female characters in Rabindranath Tagore's mentioned six short stories.
