ABSTRACT | ||
In the contemporary liberal state system, one of the key measures adopted by the state to foster women's economic empowerment is gender budgeting. The objective of gender budgeting is to incorporate specific strategies within the state's central budget—the estimated financial plan formulated for a specific period—in order to uphold economic equity between men and women. Although, within the framework of a liberal state, the government is not strictly obligated to provide economic assistance to its citizens, the state nonetheless formulates appropriate plans for economic development—commensurate with its own capabilities—in accordance with the 'Directive Principles of State Policy' outlined in Chapter IV of the Indian Constitution; a process through which the government's own legitimacy is progressively enhanced. To what extent does gender budgeting play a role in rendering the government's economic planning—specifically its budget—more participatory and transparent? How much emphasis is currently being placed on gender equality in the formulation of the central budget in India? This subject is briefly discussed herein. | ||
