Sujay Chandra Biswas, District Pedagogy Coordinator, Samagra Shiksha Mission, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Prabhu Jagadbandhu Sundar was born on 28th April 1871, on Sita Navami Tithi, at Dahapara village under Jiaganj police station of Murshidabad district in West Bengal. Just as the merciful Lord incarnated in the world to fulfill the desires of the devotees, similarly the most merciful Lord Jagadbandhu Sundar also came to this world to fulfill the desires of the living beings. Prabhu Jagadbandhu Sundar was a prominent Vaishnava saint and social reformer in the late 19th centuries and early 20th centuries. He played an important role in social reform at that time by promoting the ideals of devotion, equality and human love. Prabhu Jagadbandhu Sundar was associated with many movements such as the abolition of untouchability, the elimination of the distinction between upper and lower castes in society, and the overall development of humanity, as well as the development and purification of the backward Hindu society. Prabhu himself associated with the neglected, hated and untouchables of Dom, Buna, Bagdi etc. and developed them through various programs, evidence of which has been found in various books and newspapers. He introduced and spread the Harinama Sankirtan to unite people from all walks of life, in which people from different classes of society participated together, as a result of which social differences were reduced and a sense of unity was increased. He encouraged people to follow the path of holy life, truthfulness, non-violence and devotion. According to him, the moral development of the individual is very important for the progress of society. He considered human service to be equivalent to service to God. He tried to awaken human values in society through sympathy and help for the poor and neglected people. He taught brotherhood and compassion among all people. His ideology helped to establish the ideals of peace, coexistence and tolerance in society. The main goal of Prabhu Jagadbandhusundar's social reforms was to build a humane and just society through equality, brotherhood, morality and devotion among people. Prabhu Jagadbandhu (1871–1921), a Bengali spiritual leader and founder of the Mahanam Sampraday, composed eight books focusing on the worship of God through kirtan (devotional chanting) and his teachings on the 'Mahanam'. The eight books authored by Prabhu Jagadbandhu are Shrimatisangkirtan, Shrimansangkirtan, Bibidhasabgit (The first three books above are often printed together as Sangkirtan Padamrta), Shrisangkirtan, Padavali, Shrishriharikatha, Chandrapath, Uddharana, these works, alongside his teachings, emphasize the "Maha-Nama" (great name: Hari Purush Jagat Bandhu – Maha Uddharana) as a means of spiritual liberation and universal love. Prabhu Jagadbandhu established Sree Angan (Sreedham Sreeangon) in 1899 in Faridpur, Bangladesh, for Served as a place for meditation, preaching, and residence for devotees.
