A Successful Life through a Sense of Duty: An Analysis in the Light of Immanuel Kant’s Moral Philosophy
Chanchal Mukherjee, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The discussion of morality in the context of ethics is very significant. Morality mainly focuses on voluntary action of humans. We sometimes consider humans to be moral and sometimes immoral. Again, we sometimes feel that one action is right and another is not right in some cases. Then the question arises, what is rightness or morality? We usually think of rightness or morality as judging the good or bad of a voluntary action. It can be better said that the action in which people have complete freedom of expectations, responsibilities, duties, good and bad, etc. Although in ethics, good and bad differ according to the field. We generally consider good actions morally good. On the other hand, we consider actions that are not morally good as bad. But in ethics, different views can be observed on good and bad. One of those views is utilitarianism and deontology. In the context of good and bad, utilitarianism believes that an action is called morally good only based on the results of that action.  That is, the work that does the greatest happiness for the number of people is ethical, and the work that does not do the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people is not ethical. On the other hand, deontology believes that the work that a person does only through duty is ethical. That is, it is not considered that any work should be done in terms of good or bad, but rather that any work should be done only through duty. In deontology, any work is completed only through duty. The result of that duty can be good or bad in the future. However, the main basis of Kant's deontology is goodwill. Good will is the discipline of conscience. Acting according to duty through the discipline of that conscience is the right thing to do according to Kant. In this context, the article under discussion will only discuss Immanuel Kant's deontology. Then the question arises that is, is deontology the only criterion of morality? And if duty is the only criterion, is it possible to act in our daily lives by following that duty? Questions such as these will be discussed in this article.
