Journey Motif and Kavikankan Mukunda’s Chandimangal Kavya
Ananya Naskar, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Migration for survival plays a significant role in human adaptation. In literature, we find the context of voyage, travel or expedition etc. In folklore, the journey motif is well known all over the world.
In Mangalkabya, voyage is one of the key elements. Chand Saudagar, Dhanapati, Shrimanta, Lausena - all these characters of Mangalkabya are mentioned as travelling by sea. In a journey one moves from one place to another, but also gains experience, which transforms the character. Kabikankan Mukunda described three journeys in his ‘Chandi Mangalkabya’. Dhanapati went to Gour in search of a gold cage for the king. Then he went to Dakshin Patan and never came back home. Shrimanta went to Dakshin Patan in search of his lost father Dhanapati. Apart from this, Kabikankan himself left his ancestral house 'Daminya' in search of safe land.
All these journeys tell us about the social structures, trade, ritual, craftsmanship of medieval Bengal. Devi Chandi’s charismatic power is described through these journeys and its consequences.
Keywords: Mangalkabya, Chandimangalkabya, Journey, Archetype, Voyage, Kavikankana Mukunda.
