ABSTRACT | ||
Chandan Sengupta is a brilliant star of Tripura’s Bengali theatre. As an active member of Tripura’s ‘Natyabhumi’ (1993) he has always taken the drama practice forward on the path of progress. After his death in 1996, ‘Natyabhumi’ has been celebrating the ‘Chandan Sengupta Memorial Drama Festival’ to keep his memory alive. The main subject of Chandan Sengupta’s plays is the story of ordinary people who fall victim to various crises and hostile environments created by political interests. In the context of World War 2, Chandan Sengupta has perfectly depicted the great hardships that the war had caused to ordinary people’s lives in his play ‘Sada Payrer Jonya’. Chandan Sengupta has described in his play how the Germans, burned by the fire of revenge as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, brutally tortured the French, and how the cruel rules of war, the conflict of me versus you, revenge, and ego gradually violated the humanity of the soldiers, destroyed their conscience, and turned them into barbarity. In addition, to bid farewell to these interests, conflicts, and violence of the state, the playwright is calling on the youth to jump into another war, which will be a war for the white pigeon, that is, for peace, for great unity. The purpose of this research work is to highlight how he rose above political interests by uprooting the cruelty, brutality, and conflicts of war in the context of the state war in the play ‘Sada Payrer Jonya’, and declared the triumph of love and humanity. | ||
