Chaitanya Charitamrita and Chaitanya Bhagavata: The Portrayal of Chaitanya Deva in Literature Ayan Sing, Research Scholar, Dept. of Bengali, Sona Devi University, Ghatshila, Jharkhand, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
This research paper explores the portrayal of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in two seminal texts of Bengali Vaishnavism: Chaitanya Bhagavata by Vrindavan Das Thakur and Chaitanya Charitamrita by Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami. Both texts serve as crucial literary and theological sources that document the life, teachings, and spiritual influence of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. However, they differ in narrative style, philosophical depth, and emphasis on different aspects of his life. Chaitanya Bhagavata, written earlier, presents Chaitanya primarily as an incarnation of Lord Krishna, emphasizing his divine miracles, ecstatic devotion, and his role in the propagation of Sankirtan (collective chanting of God’s name). The text focuses on his early life in Navadvipa, highlighting his childhood, youth, and transformation into a religious leader. In contrast, Chaitanya Charitamrita delves deeper into the philosophical aspects of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, particularly the Achintya Bhedabheda (inconceivable simultaneous oneness and difference) doctrine. It offers a more comprehensive account of Chaitanya’s later life, including his travels, interactions with scholars, and deep spiritual experiences in Puri. By conducting a comparative analysis, this paper highlights how these texts complement each other in constructing a complete image of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. While Chaitanya Bhagavata provides a more accessible and emotionally charged narrative, Chaitanya Charitamrita offers an intellectually profound exposition of his teachings. Together, they shape the theological and literary foundation of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, influencing generations of devotees and scholars. Keywords: Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Chaitanya Bhagavata, Chaitanya Charitamrita, Vaishnavism, Gaudiya philosophy, Sankirtan, Bhakti movement. |
