ABSTRACT | ||
India, the world's largest democracy, treats elections as far more than a mere political procedure; they represent a complex interplay of social, economic, cultural, and psychological factors. By examining electoral behaviour, one can understand how voters make political choices under the influence of multiple factors. This study aims to explore the nature of voting in India, identify its primary determinants, and analyze recent trends and changes. A descriptive and analytical methodology has been employed, utilizing secondary sources such as books, scholarly articles, journals, government reports, newspapers, and electoral data. The findings reveal that Indian voting behaviour is multi-dimensional, with social elements such as caste, religion, language, gender, and regional identity playing a significant role. Additionally, economic conditions, developmental concerns, government performance, and the quality of political leadership considerably shape voter decisions. Factors like a candidate’s personal image, party loyalty, and campaign strategies further influence electoral choices. In recent times, digital technologies, social media platforms, and innovative campaign methods especially among young voters have exerted a notable impact on political attitudes. Consequently, the interaction of traditional social influences with modern technological factors has produced a dynamic and evolving pattern in Indian electoral behaviour. This research provides a nuanced, analytical perspective on the character and changing trends of voting in India’s democracy. | ||
