The 1971 Massacres in Garuria and Khayrabad of Barishal District: An Exploration of Memories and History

ABSTRACT
Bangladesh was born as an independent state following the liberation war against West Pakistani occupied army in 1971. The liberation war of Bangladesh is the most glorious chapter in the history. The genocide of Bangladesh is one of the most brutal pre planned and widespread genocides in the world history. In 1971, genocide, the most killing of the people in East Pakistan by the West Pakistani army and their collaborators during the war of liberation began on 25 March, 1971 as operation searchlight was launched by West Pakistan (Now Pakistan) to military operation to the Bengali population of East Pakistan. No definite survey was yet been made to ascertain the exact number of people killed by the Pakistani army. Pakistani army along with the local collaborators killed three millions people and raped and tortured more than 0.2 millions women only in the period of nine months. Pakistani army extended its control over the enter country and carried out brutal genocide in remote areas of East Pakistan. During liberation war, Pakistani army carried out genocide in Bakhergonj district (now Bakhergonj upazila, Barishal) which is a southern remote area of Bangladesh, a case on the villages Garuria and khayrabad in Garuria Union in particular. On the 28 May, 1971, the Pakistani army carried out genocide in the villages. The aim of his paper is to describe genocide and atrocious activities in these areas and it can bring a case study to understand the true history of genocide and it would exist genocide studies of Bangladesh.
