ABSTRACT | ||
This study explores the evolution of Bangladeshi cinema over seven decades and its intricate relationship with social transformation. Using a qualitative research methodology based on secondary data, the research provides a comprehensive decade-wise analysis of filmmaking trends and socio-cultural contexts, The journey begins with the first film, 'Mukh O Mukhosh' (1956), which emerged as an expression of Bengali identity and nationalist consciousness. The analysis argues the 1960s' focus on folklore and middle-class crises, the 1970s' post-Liberation War narratives and social realism, and the 1980s' shift toward folk-fantasy and action genres. It further examines the critical challenges posed by the rise of satellite television, piracy, and a period of obscenity during the late 1990s and early 2000s, which led to a significant decline in traditional theater-going audiences. Ultimately, the research highlights the resurgence of the industry through digital technology and the emergence of OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms, which have opened new possibilities for contemporary filmmakers. From traditional theater-based popularity to the modern digital era, this paper illustrates how cinema has served as a mirror to the nation's aspirations, struggles, and shifting social values. It concludes that despite various technological and commercial hurdles, Bangladeshi cinema continues to adapt and reflect the ongoing social transformation of the nation. | ||
